In the summer of 2004, Fast Company magazine was still reeling from its reputation as the bible of the dotcom era. New editor-in-chief John Byrne was tasked with repositioning the magazine to report on the ideas and trends that were shaping today’s business leaders. His signature effort was the September 2004 “Courage” Issue, which identified courage as the one indispensable element of leadership, and explored the state of “Courage” in America today.
